This is the smallest of four new "soft sided coolers" by Koolatron.This great cooler can be taken anywhere! Such as in a car, picnic sites, hotels, office, etc. For even more convenience the D13 plugs into all 12V cigarette lighters. The soft exterior shell is made of durable nylon. It's easy access zipper top makes it handy to quickly grab food on the go.Comes with an adjustable shoulder strap, an external zippered pocket for storage, a mesh side pocket, an exterior beverage holder and a bungie "hold-all" strap stystem on lid. The D13 also has a storage pocket to hide away the 12V cord when on the go.The D13 cools to approximately 30°F below the ambient temperature. This cooler can hold 20 (12oz) cans or two 2L bottles upright.

If you have more room in your vehicle and need more "cold storage" for your trips, get the bigger one. The only drawback, and I assume this is for all of these type devices, is if you leave it plugged in your car/boat, etc. for long periods of time while your vehicle is OFF, it will drain your battery fairly fast. The longest I've left it plugged in while my car was off was about 3 hours. But I did this repeatedly and it eventually caused the premature death of my car battery in Dec 07. Because I was moving and VERY short on time oh... and quite handy, I decided to open it up and see if I could do the repair by myself. I found the cheap internal construction to be the issue and cleared the fan from rubbing by modifying the hard foam frame a bit which was causing the fan to rub and sounded like a playing card close-pinned to a bicycle wheel when it ran. This caused it not to get cold obviously. I managed the repairs only to find that on the road, the current draw was very high on my TDI VWs little battery and it took some time for the device to cool down internally but it did within about an hour. On my long driving trip from LA to Wisconsin I eventually just unplugged it and bought some ice and threw it in. The device would have possibly been fine I think in a larger car with a stronger alternator and battery BTW. I also bought the battery saver. This did a bit better but I found it heated up the cabin... Now it won't cool a warm product down immediately, but it will keep pre-chilled items cold. Example: used it as a second cooler/fridge for our boat, pre-chilled items were in it all day, 90+ degrees and things remained cold. Now internal size may be an issue, the internal fan does take up some space, but for our needs, 2 smaller tubs of fruit and bottles of water, it did do the job !! |
